Assertive statements can be powerful or dangerous even. As a matter of fact, we need to take care when making them. There is no way to go back. Also, consider the affect we have both on ourselves as well as others.

Ben Franklin knew the risk of assertive statements
Dogmatic assertions come back to bite
What we think today will need revisions tomorrow
And we can’t un-ring the bell
Retractions that we make tomorrow
Are null and void as we try
To remove our foot from our mouth
If God be willing and the creek don’t rise
Too many innuendos and personal beliefs
Color what we think at this moment
And still other ones lurk in the shadows
To make us regret what we said today
Better that we temper our statements
With soft words that do a better job
Of expressing what we want to say
And hope the listener’s ear does not become assaulted
Lest it be closed
When the bell rings
And is not heard
